Frames Matter

A painting can change drastically with different frame. Many of my paintings are sold in frames. I select one that blends with and enhances the artwork. If the frame works with the painting, it will work in its new owners environment. It acts as a unit. I spend a lot of time choosing the "right" one for each piece. Some pieces only seem to work with the most simple frame while others need the boost of a more ornate one. Style of decor will, at times, present options and that's where the fun/difficulty comes in. Personal preference can be exercised, with a few guidelines. When or if clients choose a frame for their newly acquired piece, keep in mind that the focal point should always be the art. The frame is an accessory. I've seen art that is surrounded with a too wide frame or has 3 or 4 mats smothering the piece! (Just put a mirror in it!) Step back from your choice. If the frame is the first thing that catches your eye, make another selection. The frame and painting should meld. Just because the frame is the correct size, doesn't mean it works! Take some time with your decision. Or ask me!
Stop by my  Open Studio  May 5& 6 10 -4pm. Check out my framed and unframed pieces.  simsburyartists.org

I've got Spring Fever!

2/25/2018

It might be too early, but I'm ready for spring! This is time of year I start casting off the heaviness of winter. The closet needs paring down and so does the studio. I'm in a real clear it out mood!  There's a list of waiting-to-be-created pieces and they'll need space to be hung.   I have so many colorful ideas that are crouched and ready for a canvas! The birds have started singing and the evening air smells of promise...
Here's a daydream painting I just finished. The sea is calling me...

Save the date:Open Studios is May 5 & 6 this year. 10-4pm as usual

This is wonderful opportunity to paint outside in a lovely, peaceful setting and gain insights and new found abilities to improve your work. Any level any medium. I have 17 years teaching experience. I will help you advance your skills to the next level. It will take place at my home. Choose a place that inspires you, brook, woods, garden or flowers, maybe a stone wall.  There will be plenty of one on one instruction and critique. On Saturday morning we'll get started with a brief introduction on composition, color and focal points before we start to paint. We'll break midway for a delicious lunch (that I provide) while we discuss the painting progress everyone has made. More painting and a very relaxed and helpful critique session will end the day. On Sunday we'll paint with these new found abilities and finish up with a critique, handouts and happiness over all our accomplishments!
The cost $240. To reserve your spot  send $50 check to:

Sketchbook Notes

Keep a sketchbook in your car. While you should be doing at least a five minute sketch everyday, sometimes even that seems impossible. You can use your book to write down a thought,or idea about a future piece or sketch, maybe  even a color combination that seems intriguing. Your sketchbook is the perfect place for reminders of artsy things. Don't feel you can only use when you have time for a good drawing. IT'S PAPER. IT'S A TOOL FOR LEARNING.  If you consider the pages precious, creativity will have a difficult time settling there. Sketch, scribble, jot ~use it everyday. Don't judge what you put in it. Make sure it's always accessible to you. Have more than one sketchbook. Keep it in a plastic ziplock bag with a few pencils. It will pay major dividends.
